Devootion

Solo guitar can be a beautiful instrument in worship. However, the guitar as a solo instrument is rarely used. These compositions and arrangements were written to provide pieces for just that purpose. All are very lyrical in nature and allow for a maximum of expression. The guitarist should feel comfortable in freely interpreting these pieces, taking full advantage of tone, dynamics and various tempos. None of the solos should be performed in a hurried manner although most of the works contain sections where tempo acceleration and ritard are appropriate. These solos

will work well as preludes, graduals and offertories. In addition the back of the book contains solos on some of my favorite communion pieces. I hope you enjoy playing these and that they convey beauty and inspiration to the player and worship participant.

Lyrical Solos for Classic Guitar

97809888327 3 2

The guitar has so many moods and colors.  I have always loved the expressive, lyrical pieces written for this unique instrument.  This book is a collection of 19 solos of medium difficulty which present a colorful array of moods, harmonies and tonal textures.  Each piece gives the guitarist ample opportunity for reflection, interpretation and expression.  The solos should be played freely with maximum use of dynamics and tone color.  The harmonies are rich and often contemporary.  I hope you enjoy playing these compositions as I certainly enjoyed writing them.

Guitar Nocturnes

Guitar Nocturnes is a collection of 12 lyrical, contemplative solos for plectrum or flatpick guitar.  The pieces are intermediate in difficulty and give the guitarist solos which enable a maximum of expression.  The compositions are characterized by introspective voice leading and lush chordal harmonies.  All solos are in notation and tablature.

Guitar Preludes

The guitar is such a wonderfully expressive instrument.  The various possibilities available for tone color, timbre, voicings, etc. make composing for guitar a joyous task and also a challenge.  I wrote these preludes to provide concert or recital material for the plectrum guitarist.  They reflect an interesting variety of rhythms, keys, moods and harmonies.  I have always believed that the plectrum or flatpick guitar could be an exciting concert instrument and it is with this in mind that I offer this new collection of solos.  All are written in notation and tablature.

Guitar Sonatas

Guitar Sonatas is a collection of four extended compositions for guitar.  The sonatas were composed in the keys of D, Dm, E and Em and each contains 3 or 4 movements.  Every sonata reflects an array of musical moods, colors and harmonic textures.  They were composed to provide concert and recital material for the flatpick or plectrum guitarist.  In Notation and Tablature.

Plectrum Guitar Etudes Recording

Plectrum Guitar Etudes is a recording of the etudes composed for my book Short Etudes for Guitar. I began playing guitar while listening to my father, Mel Bay, performing wonderful classical pieces on his D’Angelico archtop guitar. So at an early age I heard the beautiful possibilities of the guitar played with a pick. While these original etudes are brief, they contain many music moods and textures. They are all recorded on a steel string acoustic guitar. I believe the plectrum guitar has much potential as a concert instrument and these compositions were written to provide material for study and performance with that in mind.

Psalms for Guitar Recording

This is the recording of the compositions in my Psalms for Guitar book.   I selected 13 verses from Psalms.  On each I set a melodic line to the verse and then composed 9 variations on that melodic line.  Most of the guitar solos are contemplative in nature but several are rhythmic and upbeat.  I recorded each composition on my Bill Moll small 7 string flattop guitar.  I hope you enjoy these solos and find spiritual meaning in them.

Psalms for Guitar

I have always loved the book of Psalms. The range of human emotions conveyed in that book is so real.  Joy, sorrow, fear, hope, worry, confidence, anxiety, assurance and much more spring out of those wonderful verses.  Yet underneath all of that is a bedrock faith that the cries of exhilaration and anguish will be heard and answered.  In this collection I selected 13 verses from Psalms.  On each I set a melodic line to the verse and then composed 9 variations on that line.  Many of the arrangements were written and recorded on a  7 string guitar; however, every piece may be played quite successfully on a 6 string guitar.  Where a low A or B appears in the notation, I have written a substitute note in the tablature which will work on a 6 string guitar. All of these solos are on my recording Psalms for Guitar. These solos may be played in concert, recital or in worship celebrations.  I hope you enjoy them as they are very meaningful to me.

Fingerstyle Technic

Fingerstyle Technic is a collection of 34 original compositions designed to enhance important elements of fingerpicking guitar technique. I have always felt that as important as scale and technique drills are, they can by themselves be very tedious to practice.  In addition, technique has relevance only in the context of the entire musical composition it is intended to enhance.  The compositions can be used merely as technical studies but they also may be used as short concert or recital pieces.  Several of them may be grouped to present a kind of suite.  I hope you enjoy playing these solos.  The guitar has so many moods and colors.  Good technique enables the guitarist to bring out the breadth and subtlety of expression possible with this instrument.  I have tried to present a variety of moods, rhythms and textures in these compositions and have presented a workable assortment of keys, both major and minor. In Notation and Tablature.

Velocity Etudes for Classic Guitar

Velocity Etudes is a collection of 43 original compositions designed to enhance important elements of classic guitar technique. I have always felt that as important as scale and technique drills are, they can by themselves be very tedious to practice.  In addition, technique has relevance only in the context of the entire musical composition it is intended to enhance.  So I like to present technique as part of a musical composition.  These etudes were composed with this thought in mind. The compositions can be used merely as technical studies but they also may be used as short concert or recital pieces.  Several of them may be grouped to present a kind of suite.  I hope you enjoy playing these etudes. The guitar has so many moods and colors.  Good technique enables the guitarist to bring out the breadth and subtlety of expression possible with this instrument.  I have tried to present a variety of moods, rhythms and textures in these compositions and have presented a workable assortment of keys, both major and minor.
